ICA: Router, Switch and hub

Router > switch > hub. with this you can easily understand what and how do they preform and act as.
A hub is like a dumb multiple power where the bandwidth is shared and all its port doesn't have a address of its own thus it cannot track which signal are from which device as the hub itself is identified as a single address.

Where by a switch is more advanced than a hub as each of its port has its own address and have its own bandwidth without sharing the bandwidth with the other computer connected to the same switch.

Router is the most advanced of these three and are usually connected to a WAN aka the internet through a cable modem or ADSL modem or any other ISP , it has DHCP, NAT and other advance function such as QoS, Firewall and etc. Some router even have wireless capability thus the name WiFI router, which broadcast the signal to connect eve more devices wirelessly.

For a more comprehensive explanation please read the paragraph below sourced from other site

Network Topology and Transmission media

Network topology is the layout of a network, as a network of computer consists of the server, client or server/client. The image below shows the possible configuration and types of network topology.

Transmission media consists of physical transmission media and wireless transmission media. Example of physical transmission media are optic fiber cable, ethernet cable, coaxial cable, copper wire etc. Where else wireless transmission media are WiFi, WiMAX, LTE GSM, GPRS, GPRS, EDGE. HSPA, 3G etc.

ICA: Mashup

Mashup is a combination of several web app feature and turning into a new one. A mashup or a mix of website. Frequently being closely related Web 2.0. for example, we can consider Facebook.com as a mashup as it is a status updater, a online profile, event manager, communication platform, photo sharing site, group collaboration site etc

ICA: NSFnet

NSFNET is what came before the internet, one of the network such as ARPANET that shapes the internet we know today. According to Wikipedia what is NSFNET:

The National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) was a program of coordinated, evolving projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) beginning in 1985 to promote advanced research and education networking in the United States. NSFNET was also the name given to several nationwide backbone networks that were constructed to support NSF's networking initiatives from 1985-1995. Initially created to link researchers to the nation's NSF-funded supercomputing centers, through further public funding and private industry partnerships it developed into a major part of the internet backbone.

ICA: Silver Ant Trip

It was a pretty amazing trip as I could get into the insight of the 3D animation industry. I didn't knew that a Malaysia company is involve in the in-game cinematic of several popular game such as Mario, Metroid Prime and Castlevania. I'm impressed and proud in the same time, a Malaysian company are capable of such feat. It totally catches my attention of such potential in m'sia local animation scene. Silver Ant first full length 3D animation SeeFood is pretty interesting and the award winning Saladin is pretty cool too.

ICA: Hibernate vs Sleep

Hibernation takes a snapshot of everything you got on RAM which means that everything you're doing and save it into the HDD. It does not use any power as it is the same as powering down a computer, while saving the previous state while you are working. It is way faster compare to completely shutting down and re-powering up the computer.

Standby resume faster than hibernation but it does consume a minimal amount of energy. As it basically shutdown the computer except the RAM as the session is stored in the RAM. It resumes way faster than hibernation and this is a brief explanation from Lifehacker
Your machine recovers quickly as your data is stored in RAM. The slower part is waking up the peripherals. Although your machine is in "standby" the power has been cut to items such as your hard drive and monitor. You're running your machine in a very low power mode, but it is still on. This mode can be useful if you're on a notebook and need to conserve your battery while you step away.
In conclusion standby is used if you're just leaving for a short moment for example for lunch, hibernation is used if you're leaving your computer for a few hour or more.

ICA: Ative Matrix vs Passive Matrix Display

After reading the article on wikipedia regarding Active Matrix vs Passive Matrix display, what i get is, Passive Matrix display are used in early laptop and currently it is use on peripherals that need low power consumption and high readability under direct sunlight, where most active matrix display fail to achieve. Where as Active matrix display boost high resolution colour display, faster response time and refresh rate, which is suitable to be used in most consumer device such as Computer monitor, smartphone display etc. Active Matrix te4chnology such as IPS which boost a high viewing angle and colour saturation as used in Apple's product such as the iPhone and iPad which is comparable to a much superior technology such as AMOLED (Active Matrix OLED).
Note, Passive Matrix display comes with monochrome or coloured version, where by Active Matrix have only coloured version.

ICA: World Book Day

The commence of the world book day at HELP CAT. various kinda books were on display and bookmarks were given to everyone. Another intersting things is that there's a funny tradition of exchanging a Rose with a book. Is kinda weird yet romantic-ish in the same time. Anyway is a nice experience, and I hope I could discover some interesting books or novel.

ICA: Triple Mouse Click

The most commonly used of triple clicking the mouse is selecting the whole paragraph, while double clicking would only highlight the sentence alone. Triple clicking mouse also have different usage across different application or software.
FYI, rotate wheel, press wheel and tiltwheel are all basically know as the scroll wheel or more commonly known as the middle mouse key. Most modern mouses's scroll wheel posesss all of this function some might have left out the tilt function due to manufacturing cost and also the Free-spin wheel which provide constant spinning by a mechanical motor and stop on demand. Useful for scrolling long spreadsheet. while the so called press thumb button are usually cater for gamers for added costomisable button

ICA: Differences Between Single Core Processor and Multi-core Processor

In brief layman term, multi core processor are capable of completing task in a parallel way or pipelining . As few task are being executed simultaneously, but the software are required to optimise for multicore processor to fully utilise and maximize the full potential of the multicore processor. Where by single core processor are less efficient in multitasking though it is capable of it through specific software such as the Intel Hyper Threading Technology.
Example of multicore processor such as the Intel Core i Series, AMD Phenom etc.

ICA: Thursday Surprise Dance Class

I was surprise yet I enjoyed the class. We didn't know anything prior to it as the lecturers has keep their lips tight. As Mr. John directed us toward the destination, we're both excited and nervous, as we got no ideas what lies ahead.

As we pass by the dancing studio and greeted by the beautiful and charming dancing teacher, by the way she's from Manchester, England.(PS: I forget her name =P). We began to realize.... what's going on....

Sincerely I really do enjoyed the class, it was both relaxing and entertaining. The music, the movement, and the friendly and kind teacher. I believe that this is the first time I actually attended a dance class, if not something similar a martial art class? Taekwondo? haha

Well this is one nice experience I have and I'm looking forward to the next class on this coming Thursday ^^

ICA: Introduction to Computer and Application Assignment

Tell about yourself

Hi, my name is Joel, a typical guy who are deeply in love with computers and software. An android wielding Apple fan boy. Screwed up his life, and current doing his Diploma in Computer Science at HELP CAT. While aiming himself to get into second year Degree in Computer Science at Nottingham University. This is my aim and I shall not disappoint myself and my family again.

Why do you choose IT

I happen to have an affection toward computer since I'm a little boy. It may be because that I was deeply fascinated by the computer in my living room when I'm small and petite. Amaze by the things this machine can do and achieve. While losing his computer since standard 1 or so, I couldn't recall. As his affection grew deeper even though he lost his computer.

He went and search, and search for the ultimate computer and parts that he could ever assemble or buy. He researched, researched and researched, planning and charting his course to his ideal computer that suits his budget and requirement. He went on and on, discovering the parts inside the almighty computers, observe the rise and fall of the computer industry. Till today he charted the course to become someone notable in the computer industry, setting a path for himself by studying and learn from his own failure.

Observing the startup and entrepreneur story that had succeed and failed, company being acquired, bankrupt and runaway success story such as Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, and the recent millionaire Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger the founder of Instagram which was being acquired by Facebook for a whooping 1billion USD. I strive and work, so that one day, I could be as successful or more successful than them.

The specific reason I chosen this course is because I've observe the companies requirement and the dream  jobs and company that I wish I could work at such as Dropbox, Google, Apple, Amazon and etc. requires a Degree in Computer Science, and that's the reason why.

The best gadget that you have or wanted to have, why?

My under-powered small and petite android Gingerbread 2.3.6 Samsung Galaxy Mini? Currently other than an iPhone 4S successor or maybe a slightly more juiced up and relistically purchasable smartphone like HTC One V. I would like to have this smartwatch in complement with my phone.
